narrative factsheet

 1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

In The Descent the equilibrium is when the group is excited to go into the cave and explore the wonders and there all safe

The disequilibrium is when they all get trapped and stuck in the cave with a strange entity and fight off many threats in the cave trying to stay alive

The film ends on a bittersweet note, as Sarah is alive and free, but irreversibly shaken this is the new equilibrium as she stays alive but is still scared

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

Temporal marker -How do we know what time it is

Geographical marker -How do we know where it is set

Historical marker -How do we know what time period it is, what make sit clear that it is this time period

Character marker -How do we know who the character is whether it is their job or the relationships they have

Generic marker -How do we know/the audience know what genre this text is

Temporal- It is during the day mid day around 1pm-5pm

Geographical marker- It is in a random road in America the setting changes depending on the character for example it changed into a shop for one of them as they work in it

Historical- It is in the modern era so present as you can see cars the shops which withhold technology

Character- we know by looking at what they are wearing and how they proceed to act as a person for example the guy in the blue suit saves the two kids from the armed gunmen from this we can clearly infer he is the hero

Generic- we can see from the CGI and the props which can say this is a action and superhero fiction

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

Tonystark from Iron man

Batman from dark knight

007- James Bond

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

Hot And Cold

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

When a superhero saves a person this could show that superheros are only good and aren't bad as they save lives this could be the same for doctors and nurses

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

ENIGMA codes: It allows the audience to be intrigued as it withholds mysterious allowing the audience to continue watching

ACTION codes: This allows the story to unravel the mystery for the audience allowing them to find out and see the plot

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:

  • Episodic narrative (the series)
These need to be watched in order to understand the plot of the series
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
These won't end at the end it will have multiple cliff-hangers which will keep the audience to keep viewing
  • Mixed narrative
The audience will have to pay attention to the narrative and not get mixed up theses type generate lots of person relationship between the audience and the actor
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
These have multiple stories which don't last long keeping the audience interested if they don't like long series and just want an answer

8) How does the Factsheet suggest
adverts use narrative?

Adverts have the message which there product is the solution too for example a screwdriver if you have a loose screw in your bike you want to tightening it with this new screwdriver which is sturdy and handy therefore they can fix there loose screw like the equilibrium is the screwdriver the disequilibrium is the loose screw and the new equilibrium is the loose screw being tighten by the screwdriver
