AUDIENCE THEORY 1: BLOG TASK

 1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

The article shows that people who play video games passively can encourage aggressive behaviour therefore people may infer that video games cause a violent aggressive behaviour amongst people

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

Someone may criticise this front page as it is a bad picture as the kid is only 15 and everyone is criticising him and this article is just blaming the video games and not taking account of the kid itself it could be many reasons why he doesn't leave his bedroom. The wording "Baby face loner" is very harsh for this child as he is 15 and is getting hated against this article even tho they blurred his face for his protection they called him a "baby face loner" therefore this whole article is clearly trying to persuade the audience by calling the boy a "baby face loner" and jumping to conclusion whereas this kid might just enjoy playing games with his friends online

3) What do you think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media?

I believe audiences do believe everything in the media as people just look at the article heading and makes assumption and doesn't really read the small text and the media normally portrays people in a negative way and jumps to conclusions instead of thinking about the story behind it as the producer has control over the media itself and they wont really share others opinion just only theirs and what will make the public happy

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader?

The two-step flow of communication model is a theory that suggests that there is a two-step process in which information and influence are transmitted from mass media to mass audiences which can come from opinion leaders which are normally social media influencers

2) How do influencers like Zendaya fit into the two-step flow model?

She makes music and acts she puts her opinion out and allow her audience to interpret it

3) In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

Yeah because people just look at it and don't  question it as they trust it especially with the older generation they don't question it but it is becoming more worse for the younger generation as they listen to their favourite social media person and just go word for word on what they say just because they have a following

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points. The first one is done for you.

Diversion: Film - Blinded By The Light. Entertaining and offering escapism for fans of Bruce Springsteen or anyone that enjoys coming of age films or culture-clash comedies.
Personal Relationships: Film Dark knight people have a fan base of batman as they give personal information with him as he lost his family people may relate to him
Personal Identity: Blue planet gives us a insight of environment and how we effect it
Surveillance:
BBC news as it tells us information about the whole world like whats happening in the world right now

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

People have as it's the only source they get about the world so they become reliant on it and therefore have to trust it sometimes they go back on it like when Donald trump tweeted fake news which made loads of people to believe him as he has a following and was a former president this is a example of the two step flow model

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

It has as there are new news outlets which people may trust more than the main ones this isn't a problem as there are more social media platforms which allows people to express their point and views on whats happening in the world for example twitter

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? Why?

Media overall doesn't have an impact on me and my emotions and it doesn't effect my well being it just only makes me think about the world and how people affect it with their actions

Semiotics

  1) What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters from the opening of the film? That the two character were not well educated and homeless with nothing to do and were violent. They both also were typical dismissive teenagers. 2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Saussure’s belief that signs are polysemic – open to interpretation or more than one meaning? It Subverts the dominate ideology as the guy helps the homeless old man and gives him bananas and they do not engage into physical violence with other people and they both have knowledge of political figures as teenagers which suggest that they may be educated. Part 2) Media Magazine theory drop: Semiotics  1) What did Ferdinand de Saussure suggest are the two parts that make up a sign? The signifier-The thing which does the communication. The Signified-Which is communicated. 2) What does ‘polysemy’ mean? Polysemy-Open to interpretations more than one meaning. 3) What does Barthe...

Introduction to Feminism

  1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project? She experienced sexism in public and no one did anything as it was seemed as normal she wanted to go against that and fight that claim as it wasn't normal and it shouldn't happen therefore starting the campaign which allows it to subvert the normalisation of everyday sexism  2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? Yes because women shouldn't be treated like this they should feel safe and they should know that experiencing sexism isn't normal it is terrible. Therefore post feminism isn't a thing because women are still experiencing theses comments and action towards them. So feminism is still required in western societies  3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? It allowed women to express their views which will be seen by everyone making a community where people can all relate an...
